Review of the literature on ready-to-use therapeutic foods in the fight against severe acute malnutrition in Africa : modes of access and uses in households

IntroductionEach year in Africa, one million children under the age of 5 die from causes related to malnutritionin all its forms, at present, the treatment of severe acute malnutrition, especially without complications, is managed in the integrated community outpatient therapeutic program using RUTF, which led us to ask ourselves the question about the place of these foods in the fight against SAM. Objective
Take stock of the place of ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) in the fight against SAM in African countries.
Materials and methodsThe study consisted of a documentary review on the place of ready-to-use therapeutic foods in the fight against SAM in African countries (modes of access and uses in households). Twenty-one relevant articles were searched to highlight the operation of supplementation programs, and the challenges of these programs in treatment centers.
ResultsNutritional rehabilitation centers are surrounded by technological innovations in RUTF supplementation programs, but countless consulted literatures relate the challenges and perspectives that are experienced in the availability and regularity of RUTF. Achieving this requires multisectoral collaboration.
ConclusionTo provide quality care and services to populations and households with children suffering from SAM in Africa, sufficient resources must be allocated to RUTF supplementation programs, and proper supervision of supply and care centers must be ensured rigor.
IntroductionChaque année en Afrique, un million d’enfants de moins de 5 ans meurt de causes liées à la malnutrition sous toutes ses formes, à l'heure actuelle, le traitement de la malnutrition aiguë sévère surtout sans complications est gérée dans le programme thérapeutique ambulatoire communautaire intégré en utilisant les ATPE, ce qui nous a amené à nous poser la question sur la place de ces aliments dans la lutte contre la MAS.
ObjectifFaire un état de lieu sur la place des aliments thérapeutiques prêt à l’emploi (ATPE) dans la lutte contre la MAS dans les pays africains.
Matériels et MéthodesL’étude a consisté en une revue documentaire sur la place des aliments thérapeutiques prêt à l’emploi dans la lutte contre la MAS dans les pays africains (modes d’accès et les usages dans les ménages). Vingt et un articles pertinents ont été dépouillés pour faire ressortir le fonctionnement des programmes de supplémentation, et les défis de ces programmes dans les centres de prise en charge.
RésultatsLes centres de réhabilitation nutritionnelle sont entourés des innovations technologiques dans les programmes de supplémentation des ATPE, mais d’innombrables littératures consultées relatent les défis et perspectives qui sont vécues dans la disponibilité et la régularité des ATPE. Pour satisfaire à cela il faut une collaboration multisectorielle.
ConclusionPour fournir les soins et services de qualité aux populations et ménages avec enfants souffrant des MAS en Afrique, des ressources suffisantes doivent être allouées aux programmes de supplémentation des ATPE, et la supervision correcte des centres d’approvisionnement et de prise en charge doivent être de rigueur.
